The renal corpuscle has two parts, the glomerulus of capillaries in the middle, and a glomerular (Bowman’s) capsule that wraps up around the glomerulus like a chalice. Between the glomerulus and the capsule is the capsular space where the primary filtrate (future urine) gathers before continuing into the system of microscopic tubules where the composition of urine will be adjusted to the

Blood that is about to be filtered enters a glomerulus, which is a tuft of blood capillaries (the smallest of blood vessels). The glomerulus is nestled inside a cup-like sac located at the end of each nephron, called a glomerular capsule. Glomerular capillaries have small pores in their walls, just like a very fine mesh sieve.

Blood flow autoregulates across the filtration capillaries (glomeruli) due to the unique arrangement of blood vessels. The glomerulus, in contrast to the majority of other capillary beds, sits between two arterioles; receiving blood supply from the upstream afferent arteriole, and blood exiting downstream via the efferent arterioles (E for exit). Each nephron is composed of a glomerulus and tubule. The glomerulus acts to filter the blood free of cells and large proteins, producing an ultrafiltrate composed of the other smaller circulating elements. A key structure of the kidney functional unit, the nephron, is the glomerulus (renal corpuscle), which represents the initial vascular/renal

Glomerulus (yellow) is a tuft of tangled capillaries nested inside Bowman's capsule. The outer (parietal) layer  Glomerulus - blood flowing through a capillary network (or tuft) undergoes filtration to produce the ultrafiltrate.

• Glomeruli:There are 22 glomeruli, all of which are abnormal showing varying degrees of sclerosis and active proliferative changes. At least 9 glomeruli are globally sclerosed. Numerous fresh crescents are identified with proliferating epithelial cells seen in the urinary space. There are neutrophils present.

The tuft is structurally supported by the mesangium (the space between the blood vessels), composed of intraglomerular mesangial cells. The blood is filtered across the capillary walls of this Diagnosis of glomerular diseases requires the use of a variety of histpathological techniques. These analytical tools, their uses and their limitations, are described below. • Glomeruli:There are 22 glomeruli, all of which are abnormal showing varying degrees of sclerosis and active proliferative changes.

The glomerulus is a high-pressure capillary bed between afferent and efferent arterioles. Bowman’s capsule surrounds the glomerulus to form a lumen, and captures and directs this filtrate to the PCT. The outermost part of Bowman’s capsule, the parietal layer, is a simple squamous epithelium. Note that we do not expect you to be able to distinguish among these 3 cell types by light microscopy.

This trichrome stain of a glomerulus in a patient with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) demonstrates blue collagen deposition. FSGS accounts for about a sixth of cases of nephrotic syndrome in adults and in children. FSGS is most often a primary disease, but it can be secondary to other conditions.
